What is the procedure for calling in a refill or a new schedule 3 or above prescription? Do you need DEA# etc?

I'm wondering if when you call in they just say their info is on file, or the receptionist has to recall the License or DEA number as well. When they fax do they just fax a copy of the hard copy prescription and then store it or destroy it? I am curious, I would never do anything fraudulent because I value my freedom but I was having a discussion with some friends and one that is taking cles to be a pharm techand this topic came up.
