Lost neon???

I have 10 neon but I have come home to find 9. Now I have a tank of very playful but never aggressive community fish and never seen aggression towards a neon, just rudeness from the checkered barbs swimming through the shoal without consideration for them :) I feed my tank small amounts (varied food) twice each day but reguarly miss feeds so as deliberately not to overfeed them. I had just one fat one that looked like the photos of other egg laden neons (the others are slim) I have recently added 2 otos and gained a very small nitrite spike which is now under control and only lasted about 24 hours between 0.1 - 0.5. This neon has loads of places to hide especially the holes in my bogwood (even my zebra loach can hide from ME where i cant find them!!!) The rest of the neons are still shoaling but not too tightly. I cant find a neon body. Do neons hide their eggs, has it died and I cant find it. I cant even find a half eaten neon. What are your predictions?
