Confused about my acutene/isotretinoin dosage...?

My doctor prescribed me pills of acutene. I am supposed to take one tablet a day for about six months. The box says they have 40 mgs, but I have read online that an average dosage is 1 mg... How is this possible? I haven't noticed any side effects yet, so I'm pretty sure I'm fine.
